“One day I’ll learn self defence.”
If you’ve ever thought that, you’re in good company. Most of our students in Leeds, York, Hull, Sheffield, Newcastle and Harrogate said the same thing before they started.
They worried about confidence. About walking home in the dark. About the safety of their kids. About situations at work that didn’t feel right.
They read articles. Watched videos. Searched “self defence classes near me”.
And then life happened. Work, family, tired evenings. The tab stayed open. The decision stayed parked under “one day”.
This article is about changing that – moving from “one day” to day one.
Because your safety and confidence are too important to leave for some future version of you that might never feel “ready”.
Why “One Day” Is the Most Dangerous Phrase
How hesitation keeps you stuck
“One day” sounds harmless. It feels like a plan.
But in practice, it keeps you exactly where you are.
You still avoid certain routes home. You still hold your keys tighter in the car park. You still worry about your teenager’s bus journey or your staff walking to the car after a late shift.
Nothing changes, except that the worry becomes normal.
The problem is that we wait for a perfect moment:
- When we’re fitter
- When work is quieter
- When we feel less anxious
- When the kids’ schedule calms down
That moment rarely arrives on its own.
The students who finally made progress were the ones who did something simpler: they picked a date, put a class in the diary, and turned up whether they felt ready or not.
Fear vs readiness – what you actually need to start
If you’re waiting to feel confident before you start self defence training, you’re reversing the process.
Confidence doesn’t arrive before action. It grows because of action.
To begin, you don’t need:
- High fitness
- Previous martial arts experience
- Perfect courage
You need three things:
- A clear first step
- A time and place
- A place where beginners are genuinely welcome
That’s exactly how we structure training at Spartans Academy across Yorkshire.
What Real Self Defence Training Looks Like
Krav Maga vs traditional martial arts
When people hear “martial arts”, they often picture high kicks, complex forms, and competition.
That’s not what we do.
Spartans Academy teaches Krav Maga – a reality-based self defence system designed for real-life violence:
- No rules
- No referees
- No guaranteed fairness
We focus on:
- Simple movements that work under stress
- Techniques against grabs, chokes, and common attacks
- Awareness and avoidance so you don’t walk blindly into trouble
- Using your voice and body language to de-escalate where possible
Traditional martial arts often chase belts and trophies. There’s nothing wrong with that. But Krav Maga is built around one question:
“What do you actually need if someone bigger, stronger and more aggressive targets you in the real world?”
Focus on reality, not trophies
In our classes in Leeds, York, Hull, Sheffield and Newcastle, we don’t prepare you for tournaments.
We prepare you for:
- The walk from car park to front door
- The night bus
- The difficult customer or client who doesn’t respect boundaries
- The stranger who steps too close and doesn’t take a hint
That’s why most drills are:
- Short and intense
- Scenario-based
- Built around realistic attacks and situations
You won’t be asked to perform perfect kata. You’ll be shown how to move your body in ways that increase your chances of going home safely.
Common Concerns People Have Before Starting
“Am I fit enough for Krav Maga?”
This question comes up in every city: Leeds, York, Hull, Sheffield, Newcastle and Harrogate.
Here’s the honest answer: you become fit enough by doing Krav Maga.
You’re not expected to arrive in peak condition. Classes are built so that:
- Movements can be scaled to your current level
- You can work at your own pace
- Fitness improves gradually as a side effect of training
We’ve had people join who struggled with basic movements at first. A few months later they’re doing more than they believed possible – not because we shouted at them, but because they showed up consistently.
If you can walk into the room and are willing to listen, learn, and put effort in, you are fit enough to start.
“Am I too old to begin?”
We train people in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.
Age often brings advantages:
- Better decision-making
- Less ego
- Clearer sense of why this matters
Krav Maga techniques are designed to work in spite of age, size or strength differences. You’ll learn to use leverage, timing and vulnerable targets, not raw power.
We have members in York and Sheffield who started after 40 and are now some of the calmest, most capable people on the mat.
“Will I feel out of place as a beginner?”
Every single person in our Leeds, York, Hull, Sheffield, Newcastle and Harrogate communities was a beginner once.
Classes are structured so that newcomers are paired with people who remember what that first session felt like. You won’t be thrown into the deep end or asked to “just keep up”.
You’ll be:
- Shown the basics clearly
- Given time to practise
- Corrected in a respectful, supportive way
Most people leave their first class saying the same thing: “I was nervous walking in. I felt much better walking out.”
